Constant Mok :D

Everyone have a home, home is something we can’t live without in our life. Home is a space for us to take a rest during a long journey. When we feel tired, there is always a place called Home for us to stay. When we away from home, we will miss home, we will feel homesick. This is something we can’t experience when we are at home.

In this studio we have tried to explore what is a Home. As an international student, I left my family and come to this unfamiliar space when I was 17. There is never a home for me in Melbourne. The places that I have lived in Melbourne I called it Temporary Home. This is the 1st time I leave home. Sometimes traveling or leaving home helps you to find how a home or a family means to you and how much you need them. Even an independent person still need a place called Home.

I moved from Homestay to stay with a friend, then I moved to stay with my boyfriend, and I moved again to live alone, and then I moved to share with my boyfriend and his friend, after that I stay with my friends for a short period of time. And now finally I settle down in a studio apartment with my boyfriend. Moving from house to house, I hardly found a place I called it HOME. The feeling of Home is also depends on how well you communicate with other members who you living with. They can make you feel comfort and love.

This is the HOME that I finally settle down in Melbourne.

While we are exploring our house by drawing plans and making models, I understand more about my home in details. Knowing were the light mainly coming from and knowing the relationship between furniture. I have choose the sleeping area and study area for my model. I just simply use foam for the whole model. I didn't make any colour in it showing this is always just a temporary home space for me. But I did use colour on the bed, because this is a space I like to stay on most in my house and its also a space I create dream.

There is something we will just do at home, it usually a habit that we do daily. For example, I have to open the curtain and window every morning when I wake up. I have to have a cup of hot drink every night. I need to have vegetable and fruit in my refrigerator. I will clean my bathroom up every weekend. This is all I need to do or have in a house.
Refer to Exercise 2, I make a video about myself making a cup of tea. I have used the 1st person view in this video. That is what I usually have at night when I am doing assignments. It's mostly dark in the video as I often turn most of the light off at night. It was a tired night working time, and I recorded everything slower and sometimes blurry showing my feeling in the video as well. As it is a daily process, the video is not really well designed but its really showing something real.
In this exercise, I think I can use something to help me hold the camera, in order for me showng both of my hands in it. Then the whole tea making video will be more smooth.

Home may be is a country, or a smell, or a song. For me, HOME is always a place with my lovely family. It’s a place or a house where I can feel warm and secure. Family is always someone never leaving you, no matter what. I can't bring my family along with me to Melbourne, so I bring some memorable belongings with me while I travel. That’s usually the 1st thing I will sit it up when I move to a new house here. I am using object to create a Homely feeling for this space.
In Exercise 3, we are doing a stop animation video. I have documented how I remove my personal memorable stuff away from the bookshelf top and clean the surface then put them on again. After the feedback of the tea video, I tried to use tripod in this video. I really enjoy this film making process.

House is a physical place that you can touch, and stay in, but not every house you will call it home. Turn a house to a home is when we start feeling you belong to that place. Create a home is also about memory. In those few moving experience, every time when I pick up and leave, memory will pop up in my mind. It is because that space starts building up a memory in my heart and growing to a HOME. There are a lots happening in our life and most of the time we experience them when we are at home.
The last video I made for this brief is about a cat living in my home before but he is no longer here. I named it "The pipedream". My friend was once away, and want us to take care his cat. My boyfriend and I always want to have a cat. This is also why we really treasure the time being with it. The video start from reality to memory then back to reality. In the reality part, I start with images of the real space to the model. I want to show that with out the kitten there, the house even with my stuffs sometimes just like a blank white space for me as we see in the model.
In this exercise, I have tried something I have not done before, which is recording sounds. I have record sounds from my music box for edit in the cat documentary part, and sound of my alarm which editing in the middle of memory back to reality. Then I also recorded the high heel walking to a door and door close sound, putting at the end of the video.

video image - under the desk is some where the kitten like to hide himself under it. (model)

video image - I have make 2 video overlap, showing its just a memory, not happening in real

video image - more dramatic images overlapped, and i also added old video effect in the memory part

video image - I have use the same low angle for the image and the video

video image - bring everyone to the white model to end the video

This is a very interesting brief so far, I like sharing my experience with classmates and getting feedback. By chatting with them my ideas build up. I enjoy doing the video especially the stop motion animation. They are really amazing when you joining all the images together. I would like to try something more about it in the rest of the semester.
