Laura

For this semester we were asked to start documenting every day things we do around our homes, through class discussions I started to see the differences between the house and the home.  The home is the place were we as individuals can feel safe and secure, however as a class we worked out that the idea of home is very varied.

As the first exercise we were asked to film ourselves making a simple cup of tea, this process and watching it back afterwards made me notice things about this simple process such as the noises I make and things I do subconsciously while making a cup of tea.

I made this film twice as the first time I thought was very long however this is the one I ended up using as with some editing it was the better of the two.

As the second exercise we were asked to start mapping out our own houses by taking photos and drawing floor plans. From this documentation we were to make a scale model of two areas of our house, which would then be used for filming in later weeks.

As I got to documenting my home I began to realize all the noises of traffic, my parents radios, my dogs barking, the shower running, the Tv and dvds, doors shutting, my family cooking and talking as well as all the in between noises that you are not sure where they come from.

While we were working on the documenting of our homes we also worked on the third exercise, which was a stop animation of something within our home. This stop animation was to document a changing element within our home. When I was brain storming at home I was watching my family doing their everyday things around the home. I ended up creating a stop animation of my mum making stock one afternoon.

As part of the second exercise I stared to create a model of my bedroom and the hallway outside my bedroom. This scale model was at 1:10 scale is rather large, however when I made one at 1:20 it was too small to use my camera in with ease. Once the model was finished I started to work on filming for the project “Real and Unreal”

For the “Real and Unreal” exercise we had to combine real footage of our homes with footage that has been filmed within the model. For this project I wanted to tell the story of me unpacking my wardrobe from my recent overseas trip.

Memory Is Home

Memory Is Home

Memory is critical to humans and all other living organisms. Practically all of our daily activities talking, understanding, reading, socializing depend on our having learned and stored information about our environments. Memory allows us to retrieve events from the distant past or from moments ago. It enables us to learn new skills and to form habits. Without the ability to access past experiences or information, we would be unable to comprehend language, recognize our friends and family members, find our way home, or even tie a shoe. Life would be a series of disconnected experiences, each one new and unfamiliar. Without any sort of memory, humans would quickly perish.

Preparing The Model

This was a very difficult task for me. Taking up to 2days building the model our of foam and furniture out of air dry clay. It made me concentrate on all the detail that i have never saw in my room or corridor.

 Stop Motion
Sunset

Stop motion (also known as stop action) is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence.

TEA

By making tea I have taking into consideration the process with great detail. This made me aware of what I was doing during the making of the video. I got the sense of homeliness through me and felt the happiness of enjoying a cup of tea rather than just drinking it as an everyday routine.

As I started documenting things I do in my home I came to realize that there are a lot of things that I take for granted. When I started filming my self-making a cup of tea I started realizing things I never noticed before, such as touch, smell, noise, emotions and memory. Every time I would make a cup of tea I would experience different things such as the smell of the steam brushing on my face, the different noises that occur from time to time and the thoughts and memories that come up in my mind, the smell that brings up all memories weather good or bad. Feeling the different surfaces weather cold, hot, rough, smooth or slippery. Watching the tea getting ready makes me zone out to this other world; I call it the interior of my thoughts. As soon as the hot tea touches my lips and the fragrances rush up my taste buds I would snap back to the real world.

As I got to know my home more and more I realized how quiet it was, something I never came across until I started filming my real space and my imaginary space (the journey from the noisy city to the quiet home). Every time I would walk home I would hear and sea things I never notice before but was always there like construction sites, the noise and smell of the rain, people walking and talking.  i started noticing sounds like the door squeak when I closed the door, the door slamming back, the door knob turning, the key sliding in to the lock, the carpet noise when I walk  and by body rubbing ageist the doona when I tuck my self into bed, the plait noise while doing the dished and other strange noises the come from the unknown.

<Experiecing the Home >

- When I was the first class, I thouthgt  what is the home and what is the meaning of the home?
  I think the home is a family.

- I compared between the Korea house (my country's home) and Australia house which I am living in here.

<Observation of my room>

 - A Big room but simple furniture and color.

 - For making modeling I tried to look at my room.

 - What I need or not in my modeling. How do I make  modeling and which material will I use for
    it.

<Taking Video (Making Tea & Short Amimation)>

- I tried other video ( making coffee, fruite juce) as test things before  this one. Through I decided which angle and sound are better.

- Stop animation was an interesting excercise although I should try to match the speed of pictures with a sound music.

<Making Modeling>

- Taking picture for variety perspectives
  Some I took worng and inclined angles but better than
  before.

-When I took pictures I was interesting cuse of reflecting real building on modeling. It makes the modeling is more really.

<Real & Unreal>

- My first story was that my daily routine in the morning but Bruce suggested that the video is contrasted two side on the one screen as real & unreal. Also Emily intruduced some fime (500 days of summer) about this skill. So I accepted this suggestion.

Somebody would say this is not story or this video is not ineresting because of no interesting stroy. However, I focused real and unreal and I tried how can make my modeling as real room by this exercise.

I live in a share house that is aparment and also I am sharing my room with another korean girl. Before I came into Australia, I have never thought I will share the room. It has nagative things for example I cannot control all things and I would expose my privacy. Although my home has thses bad things, I like currently house becuse I can reduce loneliness. Sometimes we have parties so we make and eat food togater. I think 7 people are also my another family.

I like making modeling from when I was young. Through these exersices, I understood funiture structure and relation about humen and space again. Also, the making video is interesting activety. In the semester 1 I learned after affect progran at community class. In that time, this program is difficult and making move is hard exersice but I changed my mind because of another program that is a  premiere. It is easier than affect.

As well, I think I need to try research design ideas and devloping technical skill for next brief 2 and the  final project.

Toy

From completing all the tasks that we were given, it really got me thinking; as the exercises required us to explore psychically and mentally with the space, I realized what makes a house feel like a home. From my experience from 4 years ago, when I was studying in New Zealand, I didn’t know what or why I felt so home sick until I finally decided to move here to Melbourne.

Every exercise has a great arrangement as we started to learn from the very basic knowledge without even knowing, I have learned something from those task until the next task comes up and I think back about the previous exercise and I know how to develop the idea and concept from the understanding that I have from the first task.

Model photos

The experiences that I’ve gained from all the exercises I have taken part in have allowed me to develop an understanding on short films and on the space of my apartment that I am currently working on.

For this particular exercise, we were asked to measure our own space by physically measuring it to make a model for the next exercise. In my opinion, this is a very effective method to get to know your own space as you have to carefully observe and learn about every single detail about the room.

In the next exercise, we learned how to correctly operate a camera to make a short film using different methods; different angles, different light sources, etc. This led us to achieving different results using different methods, thus experiencing the different points of view through his or her video. In my work, I chose to express through the film the experience of making a cup of tea. I showed in my work how I usually have to wait for the water to boil, then how I have to prepare all the necessary elements that I need when I hear the familiar sound of the kettle boiling, and that slowly fading sound after it reaches its boiling point.

After the above exercise, for our next task, we were asked to show the difference between experiences that changes overtime. From the results I attained from my last exercise, I tried to demonstrate the ‘true and real’ experience. Thus for this task, I chose to produce a video, which is very different from the previous exercise, where we learned more about the making of a video and what we can do with it, such as adding effects and playing with the sounds. In this video, I tried to express the surrealism of an experience in the space and objects. The outcome I obtained was exactly what I wanted, which was to be the exact opposite of my first video. The shoes walking from the wall to the floor by themselves, and then arranging themselves neatly on the shoe rack

In our final exercise, we needed to combine all the knowledge that we had learned from all our previous exercises. We were required to make a short film to express your experience in a home. This really got me thinking about the times and feelings I go through in each space of the apartment. While doing this exercise, I noticed several things that I had never been aware of before. For example, the cracking sound when I open or close the door, and the sudden reverse feeling when I walk through different parts of the apartment.

However, even though the videos didn’t come out as I intended it to be, I found the process of producing the video enjoyable. In the future, if I have a chance, I would be interested in exploring the program, the technology and the various process of how you can produce a video.
