EXPERIENCE GENERATOR
Throughout the semester, two main concepts were discussed at length.

The first was the idea of home as an experience generator.  Through documenting homes, making notes about experiences, memories, thoughts, feelings, and routines that take place in the house, a better understanding of how we live, and what makes a house a 'home', emerged.

Also explored, was the notion of the home as an immersive environment.  Through the use of photographs and videos, the goal was to create a work which caused viewers to feel immersed, or 'within' one's home.

These two concepts, along with a personal experience of being an international student abroad, has shaped this semesters work.

BRIEF 1:HOME AS AN EXPERIENCE GENERATOR
"HOME IS WHERE YOU CAN MAKE A GOOD CUP OF TEA"
This exercise was to bring into consciousness the simple activities we do everyday, without really thinking about what we are doing. Answering questions such as "which tea do you choose? or  What cup do you use?" brings more awareness into the activity, and more awareness into answering questions about home and how we live.

[July 2011]
Making a cup of tea is supposed to provide a sense of comfort and relaxation....
In the dormitory, tea must be made using an industrial water heater, cheap mug, and communal kitchen.  These don't, however, provide the feeling of being 'at home.'
There are no memories, stories, or sentiments associated with making a cup of tea there.
The dorm room was thus, not a home.

REAL AND UNREAL
The purpose of the video was to portray the feeling of comfort and ease felt upon moving out of a dorm room.  Thus representing the move from 'house' to 'home'.

Brief 2: Immersive Environments
This exercise was to focus on the use of light and sound to create an immersive environment within the home.  The following were the results of experimentation of sound and light, both within the model and real space.

Lighting Experimentation

Photographic experimentation took place in the model, using various materials, ranging from torches, colored paper, reflective materials, and various other objects in an effort to examine the resulting change in lighting.

Sound Experimentation
Experimentation with making own noises as well as using computer generated ones, to allow for a large range of sounds.

[immersive environment sound experimentation]

Experimenting with sound and light to create lighting states in both a day and night setting, as well as imaginary settings, was a means to learn new skills and techniques to carry on into subsequent projects, and eventually inform all future work.

Brief 3: Final Home Analysis
After completing brief 1 and brief 2, an interest in the ways others live and travel, and how they find ways to make a home for themselves, even so far from home, developed.

Inspirations:
Mark Dion:
"The artist’s spectacular and often fantastical curiosity cabinets, modeled on Wunderkabinetts of the 16th Century, exalt atypical orderings of objects and specimens."

Candy Jernigan:
“In 1980, as I set out on my first trip to Europe, I decided to make a book that would contain any and all physical proof that I had been there: ticket stubs, postcards, restaurant receipts, airplane and bus and railroad ephemera. On successive trips, these collections grew to include food smears, hotel keys, found litter, local news, pop tops, rocks, weather notations, leaves, bags of dirt--anything that would add information about a moment or a place, so that the viewer could make a new picture from the remnants. Objects emerged for me as ‘icons’ for particular cities and these objects became the material for EVIDENCE.”- Candy Jernigan

[Some questions asked during the interview process:
What defines a 'home' to you?
What do you miss most about home?
What is the difference between a house and home?
Is there an object you keep with you, or travel with, to remind you of home?]
FINAL PROJECT:
This video brings together the thoughts and experiences throughout the semester, and explores the concepts of travel and home, and how they relate.
Four students, from all over the World, were asked to talk about their experiences...

The goal of this project was to take personal experiences, and compare them to others in similar situations.

Final Thoughts...
Through the interview process, it was learned that most people, no matter how far from home, or how long they have been away from home, find ways to remind them of where they came from.

The objects the travellers keep as memories of home often become treasured possessions, to the point where they eventually become too valued to take travelling.  Thus, the cycle continues, of bringing around objects that have become reminders of other things, of other objects, or of home itself.

To further explore these objects themselves is of interest.  Whether through collecting, documenting, and categorizing (in similar fashion as Mark Dion or Candy Jernigan), or by creating a universal object that can become a representation of home for all travellers.

EXPERIENCE GENERATOR

This studio class was to understand the home through variety experiences and to make creative documents such as models, videos, lighting and sound design related with the home.

Brief 1 : EXPERIENCING THE HOME

There are many meanings about the home. Here is listed some words about thought home in our mind.

- Words related with the home (what is the home?)
1. Home = Family
2. Comfortable
3. Shelter and Safe
4. Having specific smells
5. Memory
6. Routines
7. Warm and The yellow color

Exercise 1 : Experiencing / Observing / Documenting your home
The first exercise was observation about the current home and the home was contrasted with different country home such as Australia and Korea. So it was involved photos, sketch and drawings for creating a model of two rooms in the home as using a scale 1:10. This model was completed for several weeks.

Exercise 2/3 : Simple experiences / Experience and time (video exercises)
The exercise 2 was a first creative video, this subject was making tea. People are almost drinking some teas every day but the making tea was not easy for the creative film because of camera angles. So this activity was for learning of camera angles which place is better for good angle and recoding.

As the exercise 3 was the different way of making films, it was used still photography for stop motion animation and added some sound in it. The bottle cups in the kitchen were used for the video and these are arranged side by side. As well, many photos needed for one short animation and the Do-Re-Mi song was added its film.

Exercise 4 : Real and Unreal (Model and video exercise)
This activity was contrasted both real space and the model. My bedroom had selected to making the model. The model was made not only room but also created furniture in my room such as desks, a bookshelf, beds and drawers. The cardboard, white board and papers, clay and clear plastic panels were use in it. Also, two films were put on one screen for contrast both the real space and the model in a video.

Brief 2 : IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENTS
The brief 2 was exercises of the lighting and sound design by our strong emotion and some ideas in the real and unreal spaces. It was also to find out shadows, reflectance, colors, direction, pattern, etc. Three videos were created through variety activities.

Exercise 5 : Lighting Design
Firstly, this lighting design was to explore a day-time and night time lighting state in real and model space. It was to learn about diverse situation of lighting how it shows on surfaces of spaces such as with shadows, color and reflections. So I tried to use interesting materials like the net ball and fabrics for looking shadows of these shadows.

Exercise 6 : Sound Design
The sound exercise was works that add the sound of the other two in the same video. Also it was to learn using sound programs like Audactity and SoundBooth. By the materials of the lighting exercise, I had decided what sounds are matched with the images. These were used the universe and sea sounds because of the presented shadows of materials on the wall. The patterns of material were similar with the lighting of planets and reflected light on the sea.

Sound A & B (The universe & In the deep sea)

After discussing about the sound exercise at week 6, I had created one more video. I also made a story that is visit of the UFO in my room.

Sound C ( A Story : Visit of the UFO in my room)

Exercise 7 : Immersive Environments
This video exercise was to create an immersive environment in my room through the exercise 5 and 6. I had chosen CDs and the aim was to show reflection of the color that is rainbow color but my guess was wrong. This material showed entirely different reflections. These were like some cells or eyes of aliens.

Brief 3 : MAJOR PROJECT(CHILDHOOD HOME)
The subject was about the childhood home. Through brief 1 and 2 exercises that are making modeling, videos, lighting and sound designs, I decided brief 3 to represent my childhood home in the memory. It is divided to three parts to express different situations. This is a personal experience and related with feeling and memories of the house and around the environment.

Memory 1
The first memory is the situations seen through the opaque window and the security grille of the house. The front of my apartment was acacia tresses. These were very tall and I could smell the fragrance of sweet acacia flowers in the summer. I used to hear the sound of cicadas for this season. Also, there is a low wood bench and anybody could sit. My neighbors and I used to play game or reading books on the bench. Sometimes, the truck sellers and tofu sellers visited the apartment. When they came here, they used the loudspeaker and bell.

Memory 2
Second memory is the same place with the first thing. In the summer, the neighbor and my home used to open each door for natural air instead of air conditioner. So I could listen neighbor’s voices, TV sound and even snore. As well, the red lighting turned in the early morning. This lighting was the fire alarm’s lighting. It caused the different feeling between the day and at night. I used small light bulb for expressing red lighting of the fire alarm and covered it by a cello sheet.

Memory 3
The last document is another house’s memory. Before I went to secondary school, I lived this house that was two levels. My neighbors and my parents cultivated grapes and gourds at the small garden in front of the house. So my friends and I used to play here. One day I got stung face by bees on my face and the face was swollen. For representing the grapes, gourds and leaves, I used the white and brown clay and artificial leaves.
