Collection of Waste-
Starting from the first day of September to the first day of October, I am collecting all the food packaging waste that comes into my home. Collecting this waste is slowly proving to not only me but the other members of my home that we go through a lot of packaging and need to make sure we dispose of it in the correct manor. It shows the amount of environmental impact we can have on the world just by the choices we make when going to the supermarket.

RELATIONSHIP TO PREVIOUS WORK

Looking through Brief One & Two, I feel that my work has kept a very domesticated quality or influence to my decisions on the context. I think that concentrating on another domestic issue which happens inside not only my home, but almost everyone else’s is another domestic quality to explore.

PROCESSES

To create this work, I will need a collection of a months worth of food packaging rubbish to show as an example of how much waste a home can produce in one month, with just food packaging. I am not certain what outcome I want to produce from this process of collection yet, but by having this rubbish I feel I could demonstrate this idea more effectively.

Below is a list I have created of ideas that could be an outcome for Brief Three which have come from my journal-
  • Word Document: A list of everything collected on each day from the first of September to date
  • Assessment of rubbish collected: Compare different weeks, different days to each other
e.g. Weekends may have had more 'fast' meal packaging rather than fresh produce
  • Create a Stop Motion film with the rubbish collected
  • Create a sculpture/artwork
  • Collate in order of collection, food category, size, colour, material, use by dates, alphabetically
  • Photograph and file rubbish into daily folders
  • Create an 'in home' installation with the rubbish
  • Create a 'random location' installation with the rubbish
  • Interview people in my home
  • Interview people outside of my home regarding their thoughts to waste and sustainability in the home
I think I may like to do a bit of an analysis of all the waste collected as well as a main focus process to give my work more depth at final presentations.

RESOURCES

Not knowing what I want to do yet, I have listed all that I may need for any of the options above.
  • Computer
  • Camera
  • Printer
  • Cutting and glueing equipment
  • Folders
  • Paper
  • Lighting e.g. Artificial, LED white light
  • Voice recorder

Amanda Brief 2

With this series of exercise, we are to experiment with light and sound

I wanted to use my home and create a eerie feeling, since with last series, I concentrated on making home feel warm and embracing.

CX5 - Lighting (Imaginary Lighting)

With this exercise, I tried using the model to experiment lighting that will create the mood that I want. I placed a light underneath the bed to illuminate the model, I didn't want the model to be too well lit.

I tried using various of filter paper to create different mood, blue and red. I also discovered placing patterned paper to create shadow that are cast onto the model walls. Using reflective mirror like paper, I were able to create different set of shadow casting.

However, when I'm editing, I realised that my camera quality isn't good enough (pixelise) when the lighting is too dim.

CX6 - Sound

I used various of objects and combination to create the sound, I want the sound to be distinct and unique, so the audience are left to wonder what noises and sound they are hearing, adding the mysterious effect that I'm looking for.

I used two ruler scraping each other, scratching of the metal material with nails, scraping ruler onto the table, dragging my nails on the table, scraping the ruler on metal material. It was hard to record when I'm home because there are background noise of my family walking, talking...etc. I had to wait till everyone's asleep then to record, to achieve the best outcome.

I used a mircophone connecting to computer, using a sound program called Audacity. However the sound quality isn't good, background noise are too loud, even though I tried using Noise Removal to remedy the problem.

CX7 - Immersive Environment

In this exercise, I used my real home to recreate the effect that I achieve in my previous videos, I recorded new sound effect using a digital recorder.  I create a soundtrack with rhythm so it become immersive and inviting, almost like a song so even thought it is hard to make out what is in the video visually, audience are still interacting with the sound.

First I taped a blue filter in front of the light source that lits the room, then I used the patterned paper to cast shadow on my wall. Then I used a LED light rod and placed it under my pillow. I also used the wardrobe, I shone red light from inside the wardrobe to create the illusion that the light is moving by itself.

I am quite happy with the outcome even though I couldn't improve the quality of the video, it is still a bit pixielised here and there. However the visual outcome were quite close to what I had in mind.

With this lighting and sound exercise, I were able to identify technical difficulties. I learned that while in my mind, the lighting and sound would be good, however using the technology at hand, I wasn't able to achieve the exact same outcome. We are often restricted by the technology at hand.

BASIL - BRIEF 2 IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENTS

Basil - Brief 2
IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENTS

Lighting Design

Lighting is the most important technical aspect of any photograph or video. Cameras, lenses, and everything else are completely irrelevant unless you have good enough light to make a good photo or scene. No amount of Photoshop or plug-in software filters can replicate good light.

Colour and Light
Colour is such an everyday phenomenon that we don't usually give it a lot of thought. But colors can produce surprising effects, for example, in the way they mix together.

In this situation I had an attempt in creating a dangerous world by using the lighting you normally see in a police car. To me there were danger but when I got other students feedback I found that the mind can interpret colour in any way if there is no sound to show the significance.

Early morning to morning
The color, direction, quantity, and quality of the light you use determines how your Objects appear. I have decided to take a video of the sunset through the patterned curtains of my window. Through this process I have learnt many things such as camera position and capturing the true aesthetics of light.  In my case I was successful in showing the difference between artificial lighting and natural lighting. Daylight and sunlight are not a constant source, because they change hourly and with the weather, season, location, and latitude. This changing daylight can alter the apparent shapes, colors, tones, and forms of a scene. The color of sunlight changes most rapidly at the extreme ends of the day. However there was an absence of a story/theme without any sound.

Sound Design
It's all around us, no matter what we do, or where we go. Sound. The vibrations of the molecules that generate the effects on our ears we call sound. But what if sound goes deeper than that? What about the aspect of sound that goes beyond what we can hear?
There is an intimate connection between sound and light, like twin flames of each other, wherever there is one, the other exists as well. Sound is the underlying fabric of vibration which creates the light patterns we see around us.
In This exercise i used a professional sound recorder in order to get specific sounds with clarity. I found that it was difficult to record different sounds at once, despite this difficulty i could easily record each sound separately and later on mixing all the individual sounds to give a strong effect.

Pouring rain and thunder
I started Exercise A with recording continues drops of water to give the effect of rain. The next step was recording myself blowing into the sound recorder to give the feeling of wind and thunder.  After merging both sounds together I experienced a realistic atmosphere. This gave the video a theme which was hard to imagine without sound. i also saw the contrast  between interior and exterior.

The sound of nature
As for exercise B I reversed the video giving the contrast between sunset and sunrise .It was very challenging to record sounds of nature so I went to a close by park to get a closer look at the scenery.  After the recording I realised there were lots of unexpected sounds in the background.  Finally it came to me that there is two sides of Mother Nature the good and the bad.

IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENTS

In this project i aim to create an environment that are perceptually engaging, using real and virtual vision, sound and touch, with an emphasis on promoting a sense of presence over a distance.

Understanding the word immersive was challenging at the start however after facing the experience through every day routine I was able to pick up on things that I was immersed in. I realised that everything that I was immersed in was done through technology and sound. These two combined describes our young generation and the new way of thinking. I tried capturing this effect with light and sound to achieve strong and high quality video as well as sound.

While playing this game I felt like I was part of it, almost as if I was in it.  This game made me feel alive and active due to the certain actions I had to follow and it made my whole body move to the music.  Dancing to the crowds and hearing the sound of applause at the end was another thing that creates a connection between the player and the game.  It was  very entertaining and could take you to a another world you never knew existed.

Viv - Brief 2

Brief 2 is to experience lighting and sound.

Through this project, have shown these two elements are very important to interior space which could lead people into different kind of experience.

In this vedio, has a very soft story line and to experience light and dark.

Sound

Sounds create and change to the situation and the surrounding space.
In this sound experiment exercise is the hardest in this whole project.
Since for the lighting exercise has a very moderate feel to it, the sounds had follow in that direction.

   (SOUND EXPERIENCE FILM-2)

Immersive Art

Immersive environment is to create a particular space for people to experience the space in a particular way.  My last project for Brief 2, i have tried to let the audience to experience contrast with the space and the surrounding. Base on the main idea of “home", I’ve chosen my bedroom and the street to build up the work.

Filming location : Elizabeth st and Burk st
-It is one of the busiest spot over in Melbourne, and for choosing the intersection on the road is to emphasis the chaos of the situation.

Projecting location: Bedroom
- Bedroom has given a sense of relaxing space which is a contrast with the street environment.

i have tested a few different angle during the street shot.

(STREE SHOT EXPERIMENT VEDIO-3)

(THE FINAL PROJECTING FILM-4)
The angle of the street shot, the reason why i soot peoples' feet is to create an scale different to the audience.
It would lead to a pressuring experience to the audience.

In brief 2 exercises, we are using light, sound and video to explore immersion by continuing observe our own home and model.

Exercise 5 Light Design

-Day time lighting

                                                                    Day time natural light

-Night time lighting

                                                                                                                          Night time artificial light

-Imaginary lighting

                                                                                  Imaginary state – natural light

                                                                                 Imaginary state – artificial light

-Light design video slides
This video combines both artificial lights which reflect from the television and natural lights came through the window. The idea is from my own experience of staying in my own room to watch TV with no lights at night. The reason for me to choose this angel is because I want to use the door as a “screen” to show the changes of the color lights, and the movements of the shadows which reflect from the TV, also I think different walls here in this video might create better visual effects. Besides, the desk is like affixed comparison for people to watch.

Exercise 6 Sound Design

For this sound design exercise, I am firstly record some sounds at night at home, and then choose some elements from them to create two night soundtracks. The first one Yan BX6 A is based on a sunny summer night, mum is turning on the television in the dining room, neibourhood’s dogs are “talking” outside, it create a peace and comfortable night kind of feeling. The second one is based on a raining night, the television is turning on in the room, and phone is suddenly ringing.
Both of the videos are made by different layers. In the class, I learn that how to make the sound at a balance level, it is that I did not realize when I use the Pr program.

Exercise 7 Immersive Environment

For this exercise, I choose my own bedroom as the space where to document the immersive environment as bedroom is the space where I spend most time to stay and experience with, and I found there are many resources could explore. Besides, I am interesting in playing with lights and want to create a light installation in my room.
Then I do some research of light installation artists.

By Leo Villareal

                                                                          James Clar

After reserch, I start to choose a big glass window and curtains in my room as the space to create an immersive environment by using two different kinds of artificial lights. The background view is a little tree outside the window and a car park space. As the images show, the little orange spot light is a fixed light from outside and the white lights are controlled by me of a electric torch. The design idea is also from my own experience to stay in my bedroom at night.
When I move the flashlightthe light would reflect on the glass window, to be created like a stars shape light installation. During the movement, I move my hand follow the rhythms of the background music which made the lights lively.
When I watch this video, at the beginning my eyes is focusing on the little orange spot, suddenly when the white spots lights appeared, I am feeling that I am inside the video and move follow those lights because you do not know where they would move to next second.

Constant Brief 2 - Immersive environments

Lighting Design

In this exercise, we are asked to document day and night time lighting state in our home and create 2 imaginary lighting atmosphere. There are only 1 natural light source in my apartment which is a glass sliced door connect to my yard on the south of my apartment. This is why the main light source in my room is artificial light. There are 7 light source inside my apartment. Here is a drawing in my journal showing lighting in my apartment (image I).

image I

There are always have light in my room. As I am living with my boyfriend, he and I are also student here. We both study or work in the day time and doing assignments or have a chat with overseas friend at night. We always awake and there is always light on. After the sketching document and observing. I have set up a tripod at the entrance of my apartment and try to document the light situation in my apartment for 1 day (image II). I took a photo of the room every hour in a day from 00:00 to the next day 00:00. I have chose to put the tripod in the entrance because it is the only place which can capture the light in the whole space. Most of the light in my apartment is warm color light. There are just 1 light which is located on the wall next to my bed is white light. I like warm yellow kind of light in my home more than using white tone. As it give the whole space more homely feeling and also its more comfortable and relax. There are strong natural night in my room during the day time (Image III). I enjoy the brightness afternoon with my curtain up when sunshine on the wall and on my face.

I have got some technical problem when I do this documentation project. I can't take a photo with my camera in such a dark area at night. I have tried many times and lots of different methods to solve this problem. And in the same time not affect the actual lighting condition. finally I try to turn the light on just for my camera to focus then turn it off and take the photo. I didn't have any training about using camera before. So I always have to face this kind of technical issues. I know may be it is not the best way of doing it but I find a way to do it.

image II

image III

After documenting the night sources in my home, I start exploring different lighting effect in my apartment. For the two imaginary space, I have mainly use colour as an idea. Because the usual light states is really normal, and I got white as my furniture and wall colors. This space always make me feel boring. I always want to have interesting color lighting happen in my room. As different color always give you a different feeling for a space.

1st imaginary space

For the 1st design, I have tried to create the atmosphere by using an app in my phone which create a flash light effect. For me, this design is for me to learn about color in space. I have tried this design in my model. I used different color filter (red, blue, yellow and green) try to create different feeling by that flash light effect mixed with color. They mostly makes the space look mystery. Blue and green are more cold color that make us feel kind of fear when we export the space. I have used this effect because I always afraid to wake up in late night when I can’t see anything. And as I have mention in the last project exercise, the place that I am living in Melbourne is hard to feel as a home for me. It is always a place I am not familiar with. Fear is always come up in my mind and making me restless.

I like the effect coming out from this iPhone apps, but I think the problem of this video is the color is not changing smoothly. It is because I have to move the camera in one hand to create a exploring feeling in the video. And on the other hand, I have to change color and also make sure the iPhone standing at its right place. Due to this issue, I redo the video for a few times, I think the final result is the best one over all but I think it still have to improve.

2nd imaginary space

For the 2nd idea, I have handcrafted a mixed color filter, and place it on the ceiling part of the model and try to put lighting on and also on the wall in front of my study desk. This is a more joyful feeling to the house area (image IV). A place I would like to stay in more even it is unfamiliar to me. I like playing and exploring color, light and shadow. It is just like a church space for me. These rainbow like space make me calm down and relax. I can also think more about my childhood home and my current Hong Kong home. I also like when the shadow come to an angle or a corner of the room, they change there shape because of the surface. It create interesting outcome. It also reminds me of the NGV great hall (image V). I love looking at the ceiling just to enjoy a few second of calmness in my mind.

As for this idea I have just use photography to mock up the idea. I have then make a video of it to use for the further exercise.

image V - from Internet

Sound Design

For this exercise, we have to create a sound track for 1 of our lighting design in the last exercise. I have chosen the 2nd imaginary space to bring to this exercise. Because I am really interesting in those kind of lighting effect. And I have tried to do few different sound to match with the video. I used bottle tops, water waves and glass to create 3 different sound track. And I also record the natural surrounding environment sound as the 4th idea. For those 3 sound that I created, I also watch and creating at the same time, just want to make sure the sound matched with the video movement.

Water waves -
I want to use watch to create a natural and relax sound by moving the water with my hands.
Glass bottle -
I have used a hop stick to hit these bottles, to create sound with echo.
Bottle Tops
This is an old installation art which made my myself last year. It is lots of bottle tops join together with wire. I shake the whole chain in my hand to create sharp and clear sound.
Surrounding -
I have record the natural sound in my yard really last at night when there are no traffic outside. I wish I can have some natural wind sound in my recording.

While I editing the sound into my video, I found that the bottle top and the glass bottle sound track is a bit similar. And the other two sound is not match as what I thought. The water is more like a storm than a natural comfortable sound. This is not what I want to create in my video. And the outside sound is not clear enough as a sound track. So I end up chosen the bottle top sound for this exercise.

I like when the clear bottle top sound and the triangles of color light join together. They both have a sense of sharpness. But I think the video should be shorter as it will be a bit boring til the end. And I may use another light source to improve the quality for this video. As now I am using the desk light, and it is too heavy and big to move around the model smoothly.

This is the last 30s from the video.

Immersive environment

In the beginning, I don't really know whats the meaning of 'IMMERSIVE' for a space. For my understanding, it means a space not real but happen in our mind, we are within it, but not actually inside it. I start research it online, and it come up with lots of complex art installation. After go thought those images, I come up with the word "Layering". When we immersed in a space, we are part of it, or we are one layer of it.

I have used artificial night in my sound exercise, so I want to explore more about natural lighting in my home for this video. We can't control natural light, but they always very attractive and interesting working with their shadow.

My home is a ground floor apartment, every sunny morning about 6-8am after the sun rise, natural light with shine into my room. And when car and tram drive pass, they will make reflect the sunlight and create color on my walls. The light will rotate around my room, when there are busy traffic outside, the light will constantly move and create different layer of reflection inside my room.

I tried to record this effect happening in my room. After I watch it back, I think they are a bit flat even the lighting is attractive. Then I come up with an idea of me as a reflecting object as well. because I want to use human beings in the video to show people come and leave, there are lots of things happened in this space before. No one actually know all the history  behind this space, here is not anyone home, we all come, stay and leave.

Here is a 35s overview of the video.

The sound track of this video is record by me playing on a piano. It is create by some simple rhythm and I just changing my speed of playing. I used piano sound because when I watch this video. I actually like it mute, give me more space to think. I don't want to lose those mystery of it, so I chose piano. It can create graceful sound and also contain sadness to match with the video.
