Viv Brief 3- Seek

“Seek” is the final project for Xperiencegenerator studio.
We all think of a bedroom is confortable and somewhere they feel very personal with. Somehow it is not always the case. This final project is to expressing a different emotion of the space by filming.

This work is inspired by a fiction novel called “Before I go to sleep” by S.J.Watson which is a very exciting mystery story.

‘Each night when Christine goes to sleep
her mind erased for the day.
 Each day when she wakes,
she tries to put the puzzle of her light together.
But how can she know who she is
If she forgets her past?
How can she love someone she cannot remember?’

Through the description of the book, the character has experience the frustration and the anxiety of alienate from the surrounding.
Everything seems perfect but is it truly belongs to her?

Christine has secretly been writing up a dairy and keeps in the closet of the bedroom. The dairy has become a big part of her, she felt the journal is the only thing she can trusted; it tells her the truth about who she is.

Brain storming and Exercise

The aim of this project is taking on the characteristic of the character's emotion and trying to simulate of her situation.
It has developed as a film which is expressing the emotion of terrifying and nervous about the gap in her life.

Through the semester, the exercise of 'real and unreal' project was also looking at the similar situation of different experience with the space.

Her bedroom is the most dominated location where she spends the most of time.  The architecture  model of her bedroom is to demonstrate the association between her and the space.
The decoration of the bedroom is created in a modern simple style. The wooden floor with repeated pattern wall paper has expressing the characteristic of the people who are occupying the space.

Research
The film ‘Meshes of the afternoon’ by Maya Deren is the most influencing work to the project.  During the film, Deren using the same house over and over again to create an intensive situation. Light and shadow is a big part of the representation of the film as well.

filming test with different material and light in the real space

Final project -Seek

In this project is using first person’s perspective to observe the space.  The different lighting has started to build up a narrative of tension.

Choose the closet as the main theme of interpretation the space, not only because the character has using the closet as her private space but also it is very success to create a peeping experience to the audience.

A Movie Box - GROWING

The movie box of Brief 3 project is about re-creating my home experience by making a model installation with artificial lights. I began this project with the experiences of Brief 1 and 2 exercises in model making, lighting design and stop animation etc. and also some inspiration from some lighting installation artists.

Documentation
Different from experiencing my home by video of making a cup of tea of Brief 1, I start to document the inside and outside environment of my home by photograph.

I found this piece is quite interesting; it is the shadows of trees outside reflect on the window shade of my kitchen. I document the shadow changes in different time.

Materials
A shoe box, silver foil shred, wood strips, different colors transparent plastic paper

Through the documentation and also the idea of home experience, I decide to design an installation which re-creates my experience in the home. I collect the elements of TREE, LIGHT and the MOVEMENT to represent my feeling of the word GROWING – as it expresses my home memories grow when the time goes.

Amanda - A Convoy of Familiarity

A Convoy of Familiarity

Definition of Convoy: - a group of moving vehicles; covered vehicles; home

As my first brief outcome have concluded. Objects that we like to collect, interact and look at, often have meaning to us. And by surrounding these familiar objects or themed collection, one can feel that they're at home.

An extract from Brief 1 - Exercise 3 - Stop Motion

Images from Brief 1 - Exercise 1 - Model of our home
(Left, model space; Right, real space)

I decided to look into other people's collection and create an online experience where people can view into other's home, to gain a better understanding to why these objects and things mean home to them.

My work were inspired by Joshua Sofaer, and one of his art event is called Tours of People's Homes.

At first I emailed out to my friends and ask if any of them have any collection of objects that they're very proud or attached to.

I have three responds from my friends, and the objects that make them feel like home are; books, photos and video games.

All three participants received the same interview with the same questions.
"About you:
1. What's your name?
2. What's your occupation?
3. What do you like to do as a hobby?
3.5 What's your favourite past time activities?
4. What's your favourite food?
5. What's your favourite colour?
5.5 What is the most important thing in your life?

About your objects:
6. What is your collection about? What makes up this particular collection?
7. What's your favourite object from the collection?
8. Is there a start to this particular collection habit?
9. Do u like to bring these kind of object/s with you when you are travelling?
10. Does it feel like home when you are surrounded with them?
11. Have you bought any collection from over sea when you are travelling?
12. Does it add more value of home/memories once you bring back these collection with you?"

It was interesting to see their responds as they have similarities yet difference.
After receiving their respond to the interview, it was time for me to think about how to capture this in video format. I used previous camera framing and editing technique to try and create this documentary style that I was hoping for.

An extract from Brief 1 - Exercise 2 - Making a cup of Tea

By adopting the editing and camera work that I previously explored, I was able to achieve a documentary style that I was looking for.

Through these video, I hope the audience is able to

Sharon Leung - Book Collection

Catty To - Photo Collection

Cliffors Tse - Video Games Collection

Through these video, I hope the audience is able to experience through other people's collection of object and what make them feels like home.

When I'm filming the video at the three participant, I had interesting conversation about their collection. Not only were they very eager to show off their objects. I found it particularly note worthy that they think such collection/obsession are normal. From an outsider point of view, I think their collection is quite compulsive.
Then I look back at what I collect myself. My colony of soft toy and miniature things are quite strange....
Whenever I see an object that I feel will fit into my collection or genuine makes me happy, I will have the impulse to buy them

To further push this project, I want to produce images that express my obsessiveness over my soft toys and miniature objects. At first, I thought of referencing back to my video in Brief One and do a stop motion, however during the development, there were few technical difficulties.

I wasn't able to take photos myself while being in the photos as well, so I had less control over how the pictures are take. I felt that it doesn't portrait the feeling and message that I want.

Exporting Home

In the following series of photos, the aim is to bring part of my home and exporting it into public space.

Home in my memory

Through brief 1 and 2 exercises that are making modeling, videos, lighting and sound designs, I decided brief 3 to express my childhood home in my memory. This is to show my feeling and experiences that I have special and interesting memories about two homes where one is grown up home until the primary school and other place is lived till the college.

Memory 1

It is the memory about the outside which is big acacia tress with the blue sky and clouds, voices of children and the truck seller and the sound of the bell of the tofu seller through the opaque windows and the security grilles. Firstly, I have researched some images (the security grilles, the low wood bench, a child, etc) for matching with my memories.

Memory 2

This story is about the summer season. I lived an apartment and two doors of me and my neighbor were opposite. In summer, we often open the door for enjoy the cool breeze and used the bamboo blind for cover door area. So, we could hear neighbor’s TV, cooking and talking sounds. Also, I could see the red lighting of the fire alarm at night.

I used small light bulb for expressing red lighting of the fire alarm and covered it by a cello sheet. I took pictures the shadow of the bamboo blind.

Memory 3

The last story is the experience that I got stung bees. When I lived the house of two levels, the small garden was beside the house and our family cultivated plants like grapes and gourds. So I could sometime see bees and one day I got stung by bees on my face. Through this experience I made modeling and a video.

For representing the grapes, gourds and leaves, I used the white and brown clay and artificial leaves.
