Title:
'old' home

Subject/topic:
I am researching and exploring the home that I live in, which is owned by my Uncle. It is a Victorian house, and I am interested in its age and what relationship this has to the newer houses in the street. I am also interested in how there are meanings and memories connected to the house.

I will be taking photos of exterior of the house, and getting information. I am also going to contrast this house with other newer houses in the street.
The relationship between people and the history of the space.
The relationship between people and their environment and atmosphere.
The main focus is about time and memories of the home. Documenting details of the home, and how it is a place that collects memories and history.

Research:
Rita Lazauskas
Sabine Timm
Michael Johansson
Documenting/mapping the old Victorian houses

Finding out how to represent experiences of places so other people understand my experience of them. For example, I like old places, but other people like new places. Is this just a difference of opinion? Or are there different qualities in these homes.

Relationship to previous work:
This project, I have inspired by my first brief the idea of memory about the home. I wish to continue by developing the story of my home and memory, in order to represent the meaningful relationships between person, space and object.

Key question: what makes the relationships between people, detail and spaces meaningful.

Title
The unnoticeable

This project is about creating awareness to the little things that happen in a home that we take granted such as sound, natural light, shadows, smells and objects that go in and out of the home and how they affect and create a difference.

Research
  • Interesting light and shadows
  • Unnoticed things in my home
  • Things that go in and out of my home

Relating to my previous work
My work from the beginning of semester had a sense of not noticing until I think about it deeply even though it was an activity I do everyday such as making tea or opening the door. In brief three I will do some tests and experiments in the home so that I can push my ideas further.

Process
  • Video recordings
  • Model making
  • Mapping
  • Sketching
  • Voice recording

Resources
  • Camera
  • Light
  • House hold objects
  • Movie maker

Title
The Moving Box

Topic
-       The idea of the home being transportable and how people begin to make their home in an unfamiliar setting.
-       Strong emphasis on objects and their representation (collecting, sorting and displaying)

Research
Various artists I have researched in order to develop the concept are:
-       Brain Goggin
-       Brittny Badger
-       Mona Hatoum
“Objects are the measure of man’s ability to restructure his reality according to his needs” - Baudrillard 1968

Relationship to previous works
The first of my works that connects with the current concept was my stop motion animation. This film viewed a personal object coming to life (proposing that the object is more important than just being an object). My response to brief 3 ‘home in a box’ also directly related to the concept. The film showed my bedroom being packed up in real space where it then was unpacked inside a box (model space). This demonstrated the idea that a home can be packed into a box. And finally brief 7 (immersive environments) where I for the first time explored light and colour in an interior space, which I intend to further explore in the final project in terms of projection.

Processes
-       Interview (and document) a variety of people in order to grasp a sense of how people make their home
-       Explore shadow play on different surfaces and possibly with colour
-       Creation of posters that display a summary of the individuals home
-       Exploration of psychogeography of each individual.
-       Construction of a easily transportable home (Box and tent or just box)

Resources
-       HD video camera
-       Coloured slides/transparent paper
-       Cardboard Boxes
-       Tent
-       Projector
-       Editing material
-       Audio recorder
-       Paper/card
-       Scissors/glue etc…

Timeline

Week 10
Interviews

Week 11
Editing of interviews/creation of representation of personal objects

Week 12
Film projections/Edit

Week 13
Creation of posters

Expected Outcome
-       2X Films: To have to film documentation of interviews (limited editing) and a film documentation (highly edited) of video/shadow play projections
-       Posters displaying each individuals mapping both emotionally and geographically graphically.
