Toy - Immersive Environment

Lighting Design

For this exercise, we were asked to make a video from documenting a
day-night time state and imaginary state/design; light effect, colors
or something unusual.

In this exercise, I have learned more about the composition of the
camera, frame and the focus when we film or documenting something.
After I observed the light condition during the day and night in a
different time around my room, I have discovered that I am more
interested in the effects of the light, the reflections and shadows.

I chose the material that has the same effect and looks like stainless
steel which occurs a lot in the kitchen. The kitchen is the area I chose
to do my model to document the information. By cutting an acrylic sheet
into little pieces and hang them in a different height in the box that
surrounded by mirror acrylic, it creates an interesting reflection as I
move the light source up and down.

Sound Design

In this exercise, we were asked to design a sound effect to
go with the video we made in the previous exercise.

I tried to explore with different methods of sound making
using the things I have at home. The photos illustrate
one of the methods I used. I used glasses fill up with
different amounts of water in each glass and I used
plastic sticks to hits the glass to see if it makes a
different sounds or not.

As a result, I used the sound that I record at home mix
it with the sound of slow music box.

Immersive Environment

In this exercise, we were asked to create an immersive
environment in our home by using light and sounds.

From the two previous activities, I decided to use one of
the methods I used in exercise 5 when I was exploring and
documenting the light of its shadow and effect. By using a
different texture of glass, it gave me an unexpected result
when I move my light sources around. The colors that appear
on the glass surface, which reflects, from the lamp were
surprising and in my opinion, the variety of colors on the
glass surface created an immersive environment.

For the sounds, I continuing to use the soft, slow sounds
from the music box to match with the video. In my opinion,
you do not necessarily need to use a lot of different kind
of sounds to create an immersive environment. For me it also
depends on the volume of the sounds and the surrounding
as well (quite room/noisy room).

My intention is to create an experience that I experience
at home every night in my bedroom, as I need to turn lights
on and have a glass of water besides me when I sleep. Sometimes,
when I wake up in the middle of the night, before I turn to take a
glass of water to drink I will see the reflection on the glass
as the lamp is sitting behind it. Furthermore, the reason
that I choose these sounds is because of the apprehension
I have towards the dark. Thus, I want to express the
personal feelings I have through sounds in the video.
