Various excerpts from my journal and videos so far throughout the semester.

-discussion from the first class, interesting to hear people's different ideas and attitudes towards the meaning of the home

-i made 2 versions of myself making a cup of tea, the first was from a first person perspective actually making the tea, however i decided instead to document the brewing process.

- i think i had a bit too much fun documenting my home. took lots of photos and drew up some sketchy plans of my home. i started noticing and remembering things about my home which i never even think about, which made the whole exercise a little bit sentimental for me!

-my room, the one place in the house where i spend the most time, where i can decorate however i like, be as messy as i like!

- some more class brainstorming on the various spaces in the home, what happens in them and experiences the spaces generates.

-stop motion animation exercise, i wanted to make something that was a bit fun and also play around with adding in some music

-i decided to make my model from cardboard, an interesting challenge to try and merge the real and the unreal

-brainstorming for the real vs. the unreal video, storyboard ideas, what images, sounds etc to include

- although i found trying to decide what to make my film about and merging the footage successfully slightly challenging, i did however really enjoy the whole process of recording sounds from my home and merging them in with various stock sounds to create a soundtrack to represent my home

I have found that I’ve been really enjoying creating my journal. After class I always try to update it with various notes and exercises, which allows me to look back at my thoughts and processes about the house vs. the home. What I have found is that although the notion of the home is universal, to each person the characteristics and feelings towards the home are extremely varied. For me, the home is a positive place, a place where I can feel calm, safe and myself. I have nothing but positive memories of my home, from my childhood and all the way to this day, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Each exercise has allowed me to look at the home in different ways, from filming the daily process of making a cup of tea (where I actually took note of the sounds, actions that I made and can’t help but notice every time I make a cuppa), to making a stop motion of what a piece of fruit could do if it came to life when no one is watching. Although what happens in kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms you would expect to be the same for most people, through class discussions I came to realize that the activities that can take place can be as far fetched as taking photos in the bathroom to the bedroom being some people’s only escape.

Experiences in the home are so completely personal, I decided for the real vs. the unreal video to be about the relationship between the outside of my home and the inside, which for me, are very connected. When I sit in my room I can hear so many noises from the outside, the trees, the creek, dogs, people walking, tractors and at times some unrecognizable sounds, which can make your imagination go wild with the possibilities of what that noise could be, what the dogs are barking at. In order to illustrate this, for my film I decided to start with the process of going to bed, then drifting off into a dreamlike state at night, where the surrounding sounds are most prominent and can be scary at times. The making of the film taught me a lot. It was much more difficult than I first thought to try and figure out what to film, how to edit it together as well as mixing in sound. Even though the end result wasn’t entirely how I thought it would end up, that’s how you learn and I have realized that the process as a whole I enjoyed, but even more so, sound. I think that in future this will be what I would like to explore a lot more, picking up day to day sounds which at times can just be background noise and really start to take notice of them and their qualities they contribute to making the house feel like a home.
